In just a few short years Guitar Hero has rocketed to one of the most popular and most played console games. Beginning on the PlayStation 2, the first title was a success and it has picked up huge momentum with the release of Guitar Hero 2. Now, just two years after its first title, Guitar Hero 3 is currently the third most played game on Xbox Live, right under Microsoft’s Halo 3 and Gears of War. There’s no denying it, Guitar Hero 3 is a huge success and it’s ranking among the top most anticipated games this year.

For those unfamiliar with the game, it’s basically Dance Dance Revolution only with a guitar. In Guitar Hero 3 players have a wireless guitar controller and play rock songs by matching scrolling notes that appear on the screen. This is the basic formula that has stayed the same throughout all three games. The only huge differences between each game are the songs included in each game.

Since Guitar Hero 3 is being published on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii, it comes with some additional features that take advantage of the new consoles. There are over 70 new songs by artists such as Guns N’ Roses, Aerosmith, Metallica, The Rolling Stones, and more. Finally, a wireless guitar controller is included in the box. However, the most notable new features are the online features such as online multiplayer, leaderboards, and community.

With Guitar Hero 3 players can verse other opponents or friends over the Internet. The online gameplay types include: Face Off, Pro Face Off, Battle, and Co-op. The Guitar Battle is something that is really new to Guitar Hero. The game is played kind of like Tetris Attack. Each player plays the same song and instead of star power, there are power-ups. The power-ups allow the player to attack their opponent with things such as broken strings, higher difficulty, overloaded amp, and a few others. This battle mode really adds some variety to the game and a neat multiplayer gametype. This battle mode is also used during boss fights that were added to the single player part of the game.

On top of the new online multiplayer and gameplay types, GuitarHero.com has numerous community features, leaderboards, and stats that are linked directly to the game. Unfortunately, you have to take the time to sign up, make an account, and then link your account to your game with long code. After that though, you will have your own page that includes loads of stats, you can see other players that live near you using a neat Google maps, make new friends, tour groups, and more.

Guitar Hero 3 really takes things to the next level while still keeping the same fun and familiar gameplay type. Whether you have played previous Guitar Hero games or not, GH3 is well worth picking up for the $100 price tag. $100 is quite steep for a video game, but it does come with a sweet looking new wireless guitar. If music isn’t your thing, you should still definitely give the game a try. I’m not big into music and didn’t even know most of the songs when I started playing, but I love the game now and most of its songs. Overall, Guitar Hero 3 rocks, it’s that simple!
