Spider-Man: Friend or Foe is the latest Spider-Man game available and this time it was designed with a younger audience in mind. Previous Spider-Man games have been a mixed bag and none of them really stand out as great games. Sadly, Spider-Man: Friend or Foe isn’t any better and is probably one of the worst Spider-Man games released to date.
Spider-Man: FoF does absolutely nothing new. For most of the game you will play as Spider-Man swinging through different cities and locations using your web and combat attacks to kill enemies while collecting power-ups, tokens for upgrades, and keystones. There are also a few DNA helixes hidden on each level that you will need to collect to unlock achievements and concept art in the game’s main area called the Helicarrier.
The Helicarrier area is very simple and serves a few functions. It allows you to select levels, select your sidekick to play along side you, make upgrades to yourself and your sidekicks, purchase power ups, and enter into versus mode.
The game is quite boring and is basically your average bland game based on a movie. The graphics and combat system is just the same. The Xbox 360 version looks like a PlayStation 2 game. I hate to be so harsh, but this is honestly what it looks like. The combat system is a little better, but not by much. Besides the basic attacks and maneuvers like jumps, punches, and kicks, you can use your web to grapple and swing around most enemies. The use of the Spider-Man’s web is definitely the best part of the game and it is pretty fun to use. However, I think it is a little too powerful. I went through most of the game just flinging enemies around and tripping robots continuously and I was rarely touched. The use of the web is fairly cool, especially with all the upgrades, but it seems to make the game too easy.
The game was designed for kids, so this is probably the only audience that will really enjoy playing this game. This is only because most young kids usually don’t care about cutting edge graphics or innovative gameplay, they just want to play as Spider-Man! If you have a young kid and any kind of video game platform (this game is also available for numerous other platforms) give it a rent and they will probably enjoy playing with it for a few days. Other than that, this game isn’t even worth playing, even if you’re a big Spider-Man fan!
