Worse yet, a group of enemies can really lay into Spider-Man at times resulting in quick deaths. The best – and it seems the only way – to handle large groups of enemies is to employ Spider-Man’s spider-sense (automatically dodges attacks and allows for a counter attack), or to take full advantage of the aerial combat system (which doesn’t work on bosses or tougher enemies). I’ll be honest, despite all the shortcomings of the combat system, jumping high in the air, webbing some nutjob, yanking him into the air, smashing the hell out of him, using him as a springboard to jump even higher, and pulling him up again to finish him off is hella fun. In short, use aerial attacks. Just watch out for the terrible, camera since it never seems to go where you want it to unless webslinging in wide open areas. There it works fine.
The biggest draw to Spider-Man 3 was in the inclusion of the Black Suit. For those unfamiliar with Spider-Man lore, the black suit basically gives you an enhanced version of Spidey. Same goes for the game. His attacks do more damage (once his rage bar is full), he can take more hits, and he gets angry easily (scary). Beyond that there isn’t much to say about the Black Suit in Spider-Man 3.
But isn’t all bad with Spider-Man 3. Spider-Man himself finally looks, and moves how he should. In Spider-Man (2) he was far too bulky, and stiff. In Ultimate Spider-Man Spidey fit the mold for the visual style but still felt off. In Spider-Man 3 he looks and moves spot on. His muscles bugle, his animations (although over the top) seem plausible, and the red and blue suit never looked better. My heartfelt ‘thank you’ goes out to Activision for finally giving us a good looking Spider-Man. Unfortunately, the graphics stop there in terms of being impressive. Everything else from the city, the other thugs and bosses, and even the civilians themselves look like crap. It’s as if all the focus was on making Spider-Man awesome and everything else was just left on the wayside (Scorpion, Rhino, and the Harley Quinn knock off gangs are especially bad). There isn’t much to say in the audio department either. While Tobey finally sounds like he is at ease with voice recording himself into a game, the rest of the voice actors are just bad. That plus the rather mundane audio in the city itself, and the generic dialog make listening to Spider-Man 3 a chore.
