Graphically, the game is pretty decent. All the starships look exactly how they should, but the scale of one ship to the next seems off. The Defiant is too big, and the Romulan Warbirds from the Next Generation are too small. There are also a few minor details which might concern hardcore fans. The phasers are not vibrant enough, nor are the centers of both quantum and photon torpedoes. These are minor complaints, but if you are going to make a Star Trek game aimed at Star Trek fans, everything better be dead on.
This game is the closest players will get to be a true starship captain. No longer will you have to watch movies in order to hear your favorite characters. The developers were brilliant in getting all the original actors from every Star Trek series to come back and give voice over for the game. Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Janeway, and Archer are all here in fine form. This translate over into the multiplayer as well, where legendary fleets of the Enterprise, Defiant, Voyager, and Lakota can due it out all with the correct voices. Unfortunately, the biggest problem with multiplayer is that hardly anyone is playing this game online. Where’s all the Trekkies? During my entire play test of Legacy I barely ran into another gamer online and even then it was difficult to join up.
So with all these nagging problems does this make Star Trek: Legacy worth the buy? If you are a Trekki the answer is already obvious. Despite the control issues, short story mode, and camera malfunction, Star Trek: Legacy will be a blast for fans. There is just nothing like blasting away Klingons in the Enterprise-E and then immediately switching to the Defiant (thanks to the limited but simple fleet controls) to finish the enemy off with Quantum torpedoes. Yes, there are going to be some things only fans will appreciate (ship names are not random) which makes Legacy a very hard game to recommend to the casual consumer.
If Star Trek doesn't run green through your blood like that of a Vulcan, don’t pick up this game. Even renting it may be a risky investment. The game just has too many shortcomings to make it appeal to a wide audience. If you are a Star Trek fan, though, there is a lot to enjoy about this game. If nothing else it lets us live out our Star Trek fantasies since we first saw the Enterprise orbit its first planet so many years ago. Beam me up Scotty (maybe).

Except for ships blowing up there really isn’t anything in this game that should make parents cringe. |
