Not only is there really only one gameplay type, but there is only one map! Every match takes place in the same grid. Two or more players are thrown into the grid and go head to head until one is completely out of health and dead. The grid includes both blocks that are and are not destructible by bombs. The skill lies in how these blocks are used and mostly how and where the bombs are placed. The easiest way to win is to trap your opponent and then have a bomb explode on them. Avoiding the bombs also takes some skill, but the blocks provide a lot of safe areas since the explosions won’t travel through them. The grid is a pretty neat environment to play in, but there definitely should have been more than just one environment.

The one grid level gets boring fast

Another horrible part of Act Zero is that there is absolutely no story or campaign mode. The best part about previous Bomberman games were the missions and puzzles that had to be solved in order to continue through the game, not to mention those crazy boss battles. Now in Act Zero, you just place bombs in a stupid little gird…but wait it’s online and in HD!

The graphics can be in high definition if you happen to have a TV that supports it, but even if you do, you aren’t going to be impressed by Bomberman’s graphics. Nothing really stands out or looks impressive in the game. The explosions don’t look realistic because they only expand one block at a time. The overall level is very dull and not interesting at all. And the character models are all the same with only slight color differences. The lighting on some of the blocks look decent, but nothing we haven’t seen before. Overall the graphics are dull and unimpressive. Sadly the same can be said about the audio in the game. The soundtrack and sound effects in the game are there and sound alright, but they aren’t impressive.

Overall, Bomberman: Act Zero is, to-date, the worst game on Xbox 360. It has somehow managed to remove everything that the series was known for and offer almost nothing in return. There is really only one gameplay type on one stage and that is the entire game. There is no story mode and only one gameplay mode gets boring very quickly. Act Zero is definitely not worth its retail price and it is not even worth renting unless you have played everything else on the entire shelf.
