No one doubted the possibility of GRAW gaining a sequel. The first Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter was not only the first true example of a next-gen game on the Xbox 360, but also a positive evolution of the Ghost Recon franchise. By taking real life proto-type military technology and making it applicable to the battlefield, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter painted a realistic picture of what the US military would be like in the near future.

Now with GRAW 2 on the way, the streamlining and implementation of this technology is even more apparent. To show off some of the new features of GRAW 2, Microsoft just recently released a small but revealing demo on XBL. I took the game for a spin and while the experience is very familiar, I have to say that the game has surprisingly improved.

It is a no brainer that GRAW 2 is going to look prettier than GRAW. The demo in its HD glory didn’t have any restraint to show how far along the GRAW team had come since last year. While the quality of the graphics aren’t “knock your socks off” Gears, they work surprisingly well. Captain Mitchel is better proportioned, the vehicle’s reflect the sun more realistically, and the rocky environments are surprisingly fun to look at. Also, along the graphics line is how the user interface is getting tweaked slightly. For the most part what gamers saw in GRAW is going to be exactly the same thing in GRAW 2 except for a tweaked presentation. There are a few context sensitive icons which make indicating a target to the Ghost Team easier, which is a nice change. The drone’s onboard camera is modified. Basically, what the Ghost team sees is altered, but it’s nothing truly different.

Gameplay wise there are some adjustments. Captain Mitchel can, like before, take cover when fighting against entrenched enemy forces. Unlike Gears of War or Rainbow Six though, the cover system really didn’t seem to be functioning well in this demo. At times Mitchel would be facing the wrong way when in cover and no matter what I did I couldn’t get him to switch. It is likely this will be ironed out before the game is launched, and hopefully the cover system resembles Rainbow Six’s. If it isn’t broke don’t fix it, especially when it is a game coming from your own company. Also new to the GRAW experience is the anti-sniper vehicle known as the Mule.
