So jumping from one side of the city is not the only way to get around. Crackdown is also offering up three different classes of agency cars to use, plus the ability to steal any car within the world. Each vehicle has it’s own unique style of handling too. The sports car is fast and can literally drive under other cars. The SUV is slower but can scale buildings (talk about a different approach to vehicles in the environment) and the Semi truck – being the slowest – just barrels through traffic sending cars flying and exploding in every direction. Like the skills, these cars are also upgradeable, and they change physically, just like the main character does.
The Crackdown demo also shed some light on how the game will progress in the story mode. Scattered through the city are a good number of gang leaders that can be taken down in any order. What is interesting, though, is that taking down gang members removes some benefits for the thugs. Take out of the weapon supplier and the thugs won’t have the deadlier weapons. Take out the personnel supplier and other gang leaders won’t have as many troops guarding them. So it is all up to player about what type of enemy experience he or she wants. As you can see Crackdown is all about freedom and there is also a form of tactics involved.
So does Crackdown look like it will be worth it when it launches on Feb 20th? From my initial impressions, I would say yes. The game is casual, laidback, and gives gamers a huge sandbox to play with. Couple in online co-op, plus the first shipment containing the Halo 3 Beta key, and Crackdown looks like it should sell a lot of units come the 20th.
