Like the Elites, the Brutes will have a caste system of lower cannon fodder soldiers all the way up to Brute Chieftains like Tatarus from Halo 2. Determining which class a Brute is handled by what armor they wear (much like the Elites). Lower cast Brutes wear small simple armor sets while the Brute Chieftains come decked out in elaborate colorful armor complete with a headdress. Brute Chieftains also look like they are armed with either energy swords or hammers, further hitting home the idea that they are too important to be bothered with combat.
To handle this new threat Master Chief is going to need some new moves and weapons up his sleeve, and Bungie is making sure he gets plenty of both. The most well known addition to Master Chief’s arsenal is not a new weapon but the return of an old favorite, the human Assault Rifle. Bungie has seen fit to change the Assault Rifle by reducing the clip size but increasing its effectiveness at longer range. The result Bungie is hoping for is to eliminate the feeling of helplessness players felt when they spawned in Halo 2. The Assault Rifle is meant to be the all-purpose weapon. With enough skill and a few grenades not even those armed with the sniper rifle or rocket launcher are going to be safe. In addition to the Assault Rifle gamers are also going to be able to set their hands on a new Brute weapon, which is held in one hand, has two duel blades mounted on the bottom, and fires spike projectiles (Editor's Note: They look like Reinhardt's 9mm-bladed guns from Blade II). Complimenting this new firearm, a third grenade is being introduced; the spike grenade. Unlike any grenades before the spike grenade can stick to walls and after a two second delay will explode sending spikes in every direction. This will be great for dealing with campers who will undoubtedly will find new hiding spots in the maps of Halo 3.
But probably the biggest mystery of Halo 3 was revealed during the ESPN trailer which showed Master Chief using a new shield device. Up until this point the fabled X-button’s function had not been revealed, and based on reports from Bungie this trailer was going to show what the new function of the X-button was going to be. While Bungie has not blatantly come out and confirmed it, there is a good chance that the X-button will be taking care of this new shield device. How this shield device works no one is really sure. Some speculate it is a grenade, which means it is a pick-up on the map. Others assume it is an ability the Chief will always have access to, only that there will be a charge up penalty to prevent its overuse. Either way, this new shield device is going to change the way we play Halo. Vehicles and power weapons are now no longer guaranteed to grant the user with an instant kill thanks to these shield grenades. With enough skill, those armed with an SMG will be able to take out the opponent packing the rockets, or manning a Warthog.
