There isn’t a single franchise in Microsoft’s arsenal that is as important as Halo. This is the title which moves consoles off the store shelves, and makes Microsoft’s predictions of console sales into legitimate claims. Some may even argue Master Chief himself is more important than Solid Snake, Mario, or even Link. There is some truth to this claim. In a world where younger faces are emerging as gamers (those who didn’t grow up with Mario or Link) Master Chief is their hero; their mascot for gaming.
With Gears of War’s hype now over, and the disappointing problems with the multiplayer system leaving a bad taste in the mouth’s of numerous Xbox 360 loyalists, Microsoft made the correct choice of hyping up the next Halo installment as much as they possibly could. Can anyone remember the last time a game was so overexposed even though it wasn’t due out until Fall of 2007 (anyone who says other wise is kidding themselves)? This is certainly a change from Microsoft’s approach to Halo 2 where we were given virtually no information, screens, or gameplay footage until much closer to launch. Seems Microsoft and Bungie realized too much hype can be a bad thing since Halo 2 didn’t exactly live up to what fans were hoping (but what game could).
So instead of leaving the fan’s mind to run rampant and analyze each and every small detail which squeaks out, Microsoft and Bungie have decided to let us know all about Halo 3, and to let the game speak for itself. The message is simple; Halo 3 is going to own us all, and make us realize why we love to be gamers.
As revealed by the latest documentary from the Bungie camp, there are quite a few changes in store for Halo 3, the biggest being the power shift in the Covenant ranks. Remember, by the end of Halo 2 the Elites had been cast out of the Covenant, and the Brutes have now been called upon to fill the gap. The Brutes are a very different enemy from the Elites, using pack like tactics as opposed to the single minded attacks of the Elites. The Brutes know what their companions are doing on the battlefield, which creates a much more deadly enemy. Forget about singling out the Elites one by one.
