I just got out of an exclusive meeting with Bethesda where they showed off their new Star Trek franchise game, Star Trek: Legacy. In all, the demo was about twenty minutes in length and showed off what the Star Trek universe is going to look like in the next-gen era.
Being a Star Trek geek myself I can safely say that the game is going to be a blast to play once it is released. Bethesda really took the fans of Star Trek into consideration when they designed this game. Included are all five generations of the Star Trek universe (Enterprise through Voyager) for the players to wade through. That means the original Eneterprise, the Defiant, and even the awe inspiring Enterprise-E will all be available for Star Trek fans to test out.
The demo showcased two very different combat scenarios. The first was a one on one "dogfight" that recreated the famous Wrath of Khan final battle. The cinematic started with the famous first attack by Khan on the Enterprise and then quickly moved to the chase into the adjacent nebula. Just like the movie, once the ships entered the nebula they no longer had shields which significantly balanced the fight. The Enterprise was controlled via a thumbstick. The camera locked onto Khan's ship so that the player always knew where exactly their enemy was. While in combat the player can do any number of maneuvers to make sure they maximize their defenses and their attack power. Phasers and photo torpedoes were mostly used here and looked true to their movie countparts. Another great feature was the ease in distributing more power to the engines, shields, or weapons. By simply moving a circle in a triangle HUD, the player can easily speed up their ship or raise their defenses. While it is slightly like micromanaging it is not nearly as detailed as some previous Star Trek games. This is a good thing. Players don't want to be bogged down with senseless power management, they want to quickly distribute their abilities and then go in, phasers blasting. Star Trek: Legacy is pulling this off in spades.
The second skirmish shown was a fleet battle where the Bethesda rep controlled four ships: The Enterprise-E, a Galaxy class ship, a defiant class ship, and the Voyager. DS9 was under attack by the Romulans and it was the player's job to take out the attacking Romulan fleet. Before heading into battle orders had to be given to the Federation fleet. These orders could be issued to the fleet via an overhead HUD, telling them where to warp in and attack. Green ships were allies on thsi HUD with red ships were enemies. Once the orders were given each ship warped in and began their assault. It was easy to switch from ship to ship during the fight to make sure they were doing their part and the battle was truly intense. Federation, Romulan, and Klingon ships battled in a scene that would make even the most jaded Star Trek fan weep. This game is every Star Trek fans dream come true. At the height of the battle the Borg decided to make a surprise appearance and everything went to hell for both sides really quick. Even worse was that the Borg Cube was not alone. True to the Star Trek universe the Borg forces began to make incredibly quick work of any ship that came into range of their powerful weapons. It is here the demo ended.
Star Trek: Legacy is taking advantage of the Xbxo 360 power. Whether it was space, the weapons fired by the ships or the ships themselves, the game looks gorgeous. Each and every ship is recreated faithfully to the movie or television series they were featured in. Being a Star Trek geek myself I can safely say even the windows locations on the original Enterprise are exactly where they should be. That is the level of detail Bethesada is aiming for. Bethesada is also working with one of the starship designers of the Star Trek series plus some writers. So we can breath a sigh of relief that this game is going to be faithful to the Star Trek universe.
Overall, Star Trek: Legacy looks to be bringing back the Star Trek franchise. I personally had given up hope that there would ever be a good Star Trek game again. Legacy proved so me those thoughts were wrong. Star Trek: Legacy is going to kick butt when it's released on the Xbox 360.
