Sam Fisher cannot catch a break. Since the first release of Splinter Cell, Sam Fisher has found himself combating terrorists around the globe every year on the Xbox. His client list is very impressive. Whether it be cruel Georgian dictators, cocky Indonesian terrorists or power hungry Chinese generals, Sam Fisher is always in the thick of things. In the end he always gets the bad guy and saves the world. But with three titles, the gameplay and experience was beginning to feel a little old. While each and every game was an amazing accomplishment (Chaos Theory received a perfect 10 out of 10 from Xbox Core), the experience was beginning to stale. Just how many times were we going to have to sneak around levels as Sam Fisher until we finally had enough?
Ubisoft, being the wise developers they are, have shaken up the Sam Fisher formula by finally introducing a new element to the Splinter Cell world. This element will hit very hard at home if you are an avid fan of the series and an American. In Splinter Cell: Double Agent Sam Fisher will be working for the terrorists as well as the American government. You heard me right: Sam Fisher is becoming a terrorist. With the current political situation regarding terrorist activity throughout the globe this is a very gutsy move by Ubisoft. But it is choices like these that continually demonstrate why Ubisoft is one of the best developers out there. They're not afraid to take a proven formula and shake things up a bit.
Ubisoft has not released the details on why Sam Fisher becomes a terrorist. But we can assume that there is a threat so grave that Sam must assume the role of a terrorist in order to stop thousands from dying. Sam will be carrying out missions for the terrorists while at the same time completing objectives for the American government. The recent trailer of Double Agent shows this by giving us several very quick shots of gameplay footage accompanied by American agents yelling at the same time to get out or Sam’s cover will be blown. One level we know that is confirmed for Double Agent is a prison level where Sam must escape. We are assuming that this escaping deals with him entering into the terrorist cell. This prison level looks like it will be a blast as well as challenging. Never have we been put in a situation where we control Sam and he has no gadgets; just his knife. Oh yes, the knife is returning thanks to several quick shots of Sam holding and using it during the trailer.
Probably the two biggest questions fans want answered are why does Sam look so different and what happened to Sarah Fisher? At first, when screenshots of Double Agent were released, many fans did not believe who they were looking at was in fact Sam Fisher. Sam is sporting a new look, devoid of any facial hair. Several shots have shown him in either an orange prison jump suit or casually dressed in jeans and a sweater. Not the typical Sam. Also during the trailer a quick shot of a gravestone reveals that Sarah Fisher is dead. How and why this happened has not been confirmed. It could either be a way to frame Sam so that he may enter the terrorist cell or be a huge driving force in the game as Sam searches for his daughter’s killer. Maybe she’s not really dead.
The graphics of Double Agent are obviously going to be out of this world. Chaos Theory brought a graphical level to the Xbox that none thought possible. Just imagine what the boys at Ubisoft are cooking up by using the graphical power of the 360? Lighting will be improved as well as environments and character models will enter the next stage of realism.
Splinter Cell: Double Agent is going to be an amazing game. By introducing a new double agent element into the mix Ubisoft has created a unique “Alias” effect for the missions. Mix this with Sam’s new look, the power of the 360 and the possibility of Sam’s daughter being dead…how can you not want this game? Look for it in Spring of 06.
