Every now and then a game is announced that makes the gaming community scratch their heads. A title where none of the current gaming genres seem to fit becomes even more interesting when a popular developer paints the picture. There was a game this year, at E3, that fell into this category and then systematically blew everyone away that witnessed it. Enter the game known as King Kong. Yes, that big ape King Kong. In conjunction with the movie re-make by Peter Jackson (Lord Of The Rings guy, people), King Kong is coming to the Xbox 360.
If the announcement of King Kong is not surprising enough, the developer behind the game should floor about half the gaming community. This developer has become one of the more successful companies in this gaming generation thanks to consistent releases of top quality games from their franchises. Ubisoft is the business behind the big black ape. Specifically, the man who brought us Beyond Good and Evil will be in charge of King Kong. Beyond Good and Evil, although it did not sell large amounts of games, was well accepted by the gaming critics community. The ape is in good hands.
Probably the most unique aspect of the King Kong game is in the gameplay. To understand the gameplay one must understand a little about the movie of King Kong itself. King Kong, in a way, stars two main characters; the writer in love with the girl, and King Kong who kidnaps the girl. Both care for her as implied by the movie trailers. Thus, since there are two main heroes, both should be featured in the game...and that's what happened. Players will be able to play as both the writer and Kong. Now how these two characters play will obviously be different since it would make no sense to have a human character play the same as a 20-story gorilla. Ubisoft understood this too, and has thus made playing the human a first-person experience and playing King Kong a third-person.
For the human portion of the game, the gameplay looks to be similar to a First-person shooter (FPS) with a hint of survival. The setting of King Kong is largely based on the island where Kong is found. The lush jungle has an eerie look to it, almost an evil appearance. Because of Xbox 360’s power, the ambiance of this is truly impressive. Every FPS needs enemies and King Kong is offering up a unique take on this. Dinosaurs look to be one of the primary opponents players are going to have to contend with, oddly enough. This is where the survival element of King Kong comes into play. These dinosaurs are huge and the weapons the player has available don’t look near powerful enough to take them down. It might be possible the guns will serve more as a distraction tool, possibly shooting down smaller animals to distract a T-Rex. For the King, it's just a matter of pummeling with little "survival" elements holding him back. Overall, it looks to be very interesting. As for the King Kong portion of gameplay no screens or info have been released yet. However, it's highly doubtful that Ubisoft will introduce dinosaurs to the game and not allow the player to tangle with them in a 20-story brawl --obviously there's not much else going for enemies that would be fairly realistic and large enough to pose a challenge to King Kong.
King Kong is coming back to the US in a big way. Thanks to Peter Jackson’s re-make, Ubisoft has the chance to make a really fun and engrossing game. Xbox Core will keep players updated as new information about this title is released.
